The Gray Seal is considered a medium size seal with the males averaging 7-8 feet (2.1-2.4 m) in length and weighing 660-770 pounds (300-350 kgs). The females average 6.5 feet (2 m) long and can weigh 330-450 pounds (150-200 kgs).

The Gray Seal is also known as the Atlantic Grey Seal and the Horsehead Seal. They can be found on both shores of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The Gray Seal is nicknamed "Horsehead" because their profile is similar to a horse. Their heads are their most distinctive feature.

The diet of the Gray Seal consists of fish, sand eels, cod, flatfish, herring and skates. They have also been known to eat octopus and lobsters.

The Gray Seal is very common to New York and New Jersey waters.

Marine mammals are all protected in the United States by the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
